From what I have been reading, dubbing should happen when the chicks are just days old.

Titus is 3 months. To my limited knowledge and from my Internet searches, I can only find one show close enough to my location that he could be shown in.

Has dubbing been done on older chicks, and is it really worth the effort for one show a year?

Seeing that where we live, I refused to shear down my Nubian Dairy goat for a sanctioned show. What is the worst that can happen should I enter Titus in our small Fair and his comb is not dubbed?

Cockerels aren't dubbed at days old like many people keep thinking they are, they aren't like puppies tails.. I think dubbing them that young would cause some problems as you'd have to probably redub if the comb grew more (which i think is possible?).

Now, if you entered him without a dubbed comb. He will be disqualified past a year old. Before that though he can go in the cockerel devision and make it from what i am understanding. The average dubbing age for cockerels for most people, is 6-7 months old. Thank You Daniel for the answers and the welcome. I'm going to keep looking for another OEGB fan that lives nearby in the hopes I can be shown how dubbing is done before I grab up Titus and go to work on him. I am not against the procedure, I just have no idea other than reading, how to do it right. It makes sense to me to have this done since many rooster's combs become frost-bitten in winter up here.

Yeah, i kind of wish some people would video the procedure myself

.. Then it could help someone who doesn't know/hasn't been around it.. I thought about doing it myself but it'll be this fall or next year before that happens..

If you will take a close look at your cockerels comb you will see a line that goes across his comb i trim mine just a little above that line (but that is how i do it) I have never herd any one say that there is so much or so little you have to leave. This has always worked for me.As for the gills i just pull them out and cut as much as i can and make sure i get all.

Is there a standard for BB Reds' combs? I'm about to have to dub the young cockerel I just bought and would like to do it correctly. I am having a problem finding a picture of the finished product. I'd like to make sure I have it right...before the judge tells me I screwed it up. Thanks

Im pretty sure there is no standard for dubbing world wide. Pretty much just cut along the line that is imprinted on your cockerals comb, trim the lobes and cut off the wattles. There are some breeders I know here in AUS that have like a special style of cut. So is up to whether a straight cut or maybe some curved a little, small comb or leaving it a lil longer, is up to you.

I have a question - *why* is dubbing done in the first place? I'm not for or against either way. I'm just curious.

There are a couple reasons for dubbing. Back in the days of when cockfighting was once practised, breeders dubbed their birds so the oppostion bird could not grab hold of the loose skin on a undubbed bird. Therefore the Standard would like us to keep the practise of dubbing going to replicate tradition. People can also use that frostbite can grab hold of a roosters comb in parts of he world.

Yup, dubbing was brought over from cockfighting so they still kept the game look. And yes, it was to help with frostbite problems too in the northern areas. Many people detest dubbing because they believe it's extremely painful and some believe it helps to keep the bird cool during the summer times as the blood flows through the comb, up to the top and is cooled by the air but i myself don't believe it for a few reasons.

If you weren't going to show there isn't really a reason to dub unless you just like the look, but in northern areas where it gets really cold (or even the south, depends since our weather is kind of unpredictable) you will want to look into it, one guy i always talk to says this "If you don't dub them, the weather will. And it's more horrible than a dubbing, and in severe cases can lead to death or infertility".

I'd like to add that I really appreciate how awesome you all are! Anytime I ask a question, you guys answer so quickly. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. Thank you for not treating me like I'm dumb when I ask something.
And, Daniel, you have no idea how refreshing it is to find a teenager who's interested in something other than video games! (I'm sure you play, but at least it's not *all* you do!) The way you've educated yourself and have also talked to "old timers" and respect their knowledge is great. Your folks should be very proud of you!

I have some Brown Reds that I recently dudded. I didn't have a problem with the comb but the waddles were a different story. I trimmed the waddles but left the other little bit of skin right around the bottom of the beak. It doesn't look good and I'm going to have to do it again. Should I trim that part first and then trim the waddles? Rusty

You know, some people will trim the waddles, earlobes and comb in a certain order. Depending on if you can hold the rooster and do it by yourself or if you need someone to hold him while you make your cuts can determine what you cut first and last. With some practice you can do it by yourself with no problem, esp with bantams. Dubbing a large gamecock by yourself can somtimes be a little more diffcult. Just Me- but I get along best by cutting the waddles from the beak back torward the body, this way you don't leave the "bump" along the bottom beak but you will need to make sure you cut as close as you can. If you dont get the "bump" part on the first cut just go ahead and keep snipping at it till it's gone. Sharp precision scissors works best for me. I cut waddles, earlobes then the comb last. I find if you cut the comb first then you will have blood running down all over the waddles & earlobes and it makes them hard to hold when you cut them. This is just what works best for me.Hope it helps.
