Well, I finally got the project I've been working on for over a year somewhat up and running. It is a bookmarks parking directory for all subjects, not just chickens. I'll still be putting most of my chicken links in the Hobby Poultry Directory, but I needed something more to make up for some of the bad experiences I've had working for a couple of the big Web Directories. Now no longer will I be locked out of my own work for some simple personal misunderstanding. Neither do I plan on locking anyone else out of the new directory for such trivia. The name of my new directory site is SiteLibrary.

Chick Report ~ Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 12:27 AM (Midnight)
Day 23 brought yet another chick, which really surprised me, making 11 chicks total from the hatch. This will be the last run for this Brower Top Hatch 'bator unless I manage to get a new motor. The turner went out which I think must have affected the fan. I had chicks hatching for 4 days.

I have an ace in the hole - my Sportsman 1202, which I plan to get fixed up and working over the winter for use next year. Hopefully there will be a few more chicks around here next year, both inside and out in the yard with hens. I had only two chicks raised by hens and 16 hatched in the 'bator that I kept here and raised. I sold a few as chicks from one hatch.

This hatch brought 2 silvers and a fawn from my Elliott Owen line, 2 chocolates, 3 white tail buff, a fawn from my Solstice line, a splash, and a quail from a pen of G.L. line females headed by a Kost male.

It's been depressing around here this year with so few of chicks, but nothing is more depressing than not having my red hen, Henny, tooling around the yard with her chicks this Spring and Summer. She passed away last winter after many years of being a wonderful mother hen. She was no Spring Chicken when I got her, and I had her here for over 3 years.

I have chicks hatching today. This is my first real planned hatch just for me, believe it or not, this year. They are coming along pretty slow. So far there is a silver, a fawn, and a chocolate, with more pipped and hopefully on their way out of the shell. Today is day 21, so looks about right.

I did have two other hatches this year, but they don't really count. The first was some chicks planned for selling to the feed store. I did sell them, but I went and bought them back because I didn't think they were taking good enough care of them. The second only yielded 3 chicks total. It's not a big hatch year, obviously. Most of the reason is that I have too many birds and want to give them all more space, not less. This batch of chicks coming up will require a new house built sometime in the next 6 weeks before they come out of the brooder. I plan to provide for a heat lamp to be in their house for awhile since it will be Winter by then.

Oh no, now I *have* to make room for more birds. I've always wanted some quail Belgian d'Anvers. Well my friend Matt called and said he's getting rid of a whole bunch of his birds, including his quail d'Anvers. Since I had told him I would want some someday, he offered the bunch of 7 to me. There are 2 pairs living together, 2 pullets, and a single rooster. I can't resist his offer since he has some really nice ones, and they are rare to find. So that means 2 more houses and a condo slot for the rooster per my calcs. Yikes.

A few days ago, I got an inkling to put as many roosters as possible in the big rooster house I built. I only had 13 roosters in there, the ones I had raised this year, and it is a 25 rooster house. So I went around the yard and gathered up roosters, setting them in with the strongest last. It was a busy day babysitting them with all their squabbles, but finally they were settled with taking only two of them back out - one trouble maker and one that couldn't handle the harassment. Well they did okay for a couple of days, but yesterday I noticed that 5 of them weren't doing well at all, and 1 was having an obviously very hard time of it in there. So I figured by today I'd be able to tell if they would survive or not. So along came today, and sure enough, they were even worse off than yesterday. Therefore I took them back out and put them in my other biggest house, along with 2 others I picked out. They seemed relieved, and they pretty much got along, better than they would have if all this never would have happened to them anyways. They were very hungry. I don't think they stopped eating hardly all day.

So we'll see how they all are doing tomorrow. My goal was to have less pens to go around and maintain and all. The time it takes me to feed has gone down from 2 hours to about 1 hour now, which makes things a lot easier. It helps to have less birds and more in bigger pens if possible.

I emptied out 6 pens with the first move, and 1 more today what with putting the 5 back in the 1 and then the other 2 in with. Seven empty pens is a big improvement. I've only got 4 cages with birds inside the shed door now. I've been wanting to get them all out of the shed for a couple of years now. Finally making some progress. :)

Well, rather than to do as I should and make the Poultry Ring home page, I got into making yet something else new. I made a Blogging Wiki for a group I've been sharing with of late. It is called FOTW, which stands for "Friends of the Web" or as now changed to "Friends on the Web". I don't know the others very well yet, and most of them live in Europe, so to me Friends OF the Web was a better name since we all seem to be doing a lot for the internet whenever and whereever we can. But I won't argue about the name. Never know as we might get to be very good friends plus more could find us. Between all of us, we could develop a world-wide friendship group. Then Friends ON the Web would turn out to be the better name.

Well since I finished this journal mod, I guess it's about time to be back to some more serious things that I was pursuing before the journal project detour. I already have enough things going on to keep me busy for years... Why do I have to keep getting curious about trying something new?

My personal Jos's Miscellany site needs a major overhaul, the Hobby Poultry Directory could use some more links, and the OEGBCA site still has new features pending that would make that site a lot better. That's just for starts, and then there are the other things unknown...

This is my first journal entry. I just got finished making this journal mod a few minutes ago. It's rough trying to make one program work inside another, especially when it's the first mod you've ever made like this one is for me. Can't wait to show it off to the crew over at WebAPP. :)
